Viveka saraswathi- Keretoplasty & Eye Donation
Keretoplasty/corneal transplantation is an established procedure for restoration of eyesight for the corneal blind people. The eyes are to be collected from dead persons within six hours after death. The eyes are collected and preserved in eye banks.

People can donate their eyes to the eye bank during their lifetime. The eyes are collected only after their death. There is no need to become a donor to donate the eyes. If there is any death in any house or in  a hospital the relatives can take a decision to donate the eyes and inform the eye bank through a phone call. The eye bank people will collect the eyes at the place specified by the relatives as early as possible to avoid inconvenience to the breveraed family. It may take about 15 to 20 minutes to collect the eyes from the body and close the eyelids. There will be no change in the appreance of the face of the dead body and it will look as though they are sleeping with closed eyes. No body has to pay any collection charges and the eye bank service is totally free.

Somehow due to age old prejudices people are reluctant to donate the eyes from the dead body, though they appreciate the usefullness of eye donation, which restores eyesight to the corneal blind people. It is not the pledging of the eyes by a living person that counts but it is the timely intimation by the relatives to the eye bank that helps in collecting the eyes. Collection from far off places is also very difficult,

Some eye bank are functions at present that have been establised by the Karnataka government at Regional Institute of Opthalmology, Bangalore and at other places.

Sri Vivekananda Sevashrama is planning to coordinate eye collection activities with Minto hospital eye bank in Bangalore, by providing vehicle for the collection of donated eyes within 100 kms around bangalore city. We are also planning to organize wide publicity for eye donation in rural areas also. We intend to assist the eye bank for the collection of 100 eyes during the year 06-07. Private opthalmic surgeons residing in semi urban and rural areas will be requested to help in the collection of donated eyes by offering some incentives for collecting and sending the eyes to the eye bank.

WE NEED A VEHICLE WITH DRIVER AND FUNDS FOR THE HUMANITARIAN PROJECT, WHICH WILL HELP US IN RESTORING EYESIGHT TO THE CORNEAL BLIND PEOPLE.
